Cave People
Cave People’s Dave Tomaine has always been more interested in direct, emotive songwriting than virtuosic solos or complicated time signatures. Growing up in Scranton’s thriving music scene (which gave us bands like Tiger’s Jaw, Three Man Cannon, and Kite Party, to name a few), he learned the ropes and began recording on his own. They were simple songs at first, just guitar and keyboards, heavily influenced by the earnestness of Bright Eyes and Broken Social Scene. But in the years since, Tomaine has been joined by a backing band and managed to carve out a distinct space for himself in Philadelphia.
Following in the early-00s post-punk footsteps of 2016’s Sinning Tree, Kingfisher, the latest Cave People release, feels fuller; it’s more hopeful and more resigned at the same time, as though Tomaine has found some solace in recognizing his own place. His crooning, often mournful voice seems to carry the weight of the world while speaking frankly about love, loss, sex, and loneliness—well-worn themes that connect with all of us. “Repeat the same old lines,” he sings in “Fair,” the EP’s closer, “I think they’re gonna hit this time.”

Recorded by Matt Schimelfenig (Three Man Cannon, Queen Jesus) at The Bunk in Henryville, PA, Kingfisher comes out April 6th on Stereophonodon Records.
