Young Widows
Young Widows
Young Widows' bruising 2006 debut, Settle Down City, introduced the Louisville, KY trio as an ugly force to be reckoned with. Two years later they dropped Old Wounds, their sophomore stomp that inspired at least a dozen imitators of varying degrees of success. From there the band traded some of their trademark fury for the bleak, widescreen atmospheres of In and Out of Youth and Lightness. Now, three years later, Young Widows meld the strengths of their past and their tenacity for the future to forge Easy Pain, an album perfectly befitting their merciless moniker.

Fight Amp
Three cheers for toiling away in the underground.

One thing's for sure – as seasoned and accomplished as these three dudes have become over the last few years, there isn't much in the way of riches or mass recognition at the end of this noisy rainbow. Don't be fooled by a world where Pitchfork and NPR praise the esoteric beauty of all things sub-genre'd in metal. Something tells me that those folks aren't showing up to hear Fight Amp lock into some of the best modern noise rock grooves this side of Unsane in grimy bars once smoky, now offering only wafts of stale beer and even staler urine.

It's through that filter that Fight Amp lives and that their heavy tunes are meant to be experienced.

In the late-1980s/early-90s, Amphetamine Reptile belched forth West Coast grit (the Melvins, Steel Pole Bath Tub), East Coast noise (Helmet, Unsane), and Midwest dirt (the Cows, Hammerhead); Touch and Go-- pre-indie rock days-- likewise issued filth and difficulty via Big Black, Butthole Surfers, and the Jesus Lizard. Though sonically disparate, these bands shared a contemptuous disregard for rock's playbook.

One of the most criminally under rated bands in the Philadelphia area.
