Ars Nova Workshop welcomes the New York City trio Zs.

Founded by saxophonist Sam Hillmer, Zs has performed in ensembles ranging from a duo to a sextet. For the group's upcoming album, XE, Hillmer is joined by percussionist Greg Fox (Liturgy, Guardian Alien, Man Forever) and avant-classical guitarist and composer Patrick Higgins. Zs has been described variously asno-wave, noise, post-minimalist, drone, and psych, but Zs is primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener through extended technique, instrumental synthesis, and an uncanny communication between the musicians.

The New York Times calls Zs “one of the strongest avant-garde bands in New York,” and the Wall Street Journal notes their paradoxical arrangements: “Zs play meticulous, exacting music in which no note sounds accidental or hastily arranged. It's a fact worth keeping in mind as they also seem compelled to scramble everything that 'meticulous' and 'exacting' might mean.”

XE, the group's first full length since 2010's New Slaves and the first with the current lineup, is due at the end of January 2015 on Northern Spy Records.
